Vegetarian food in Singapore Hawker Centres would invariably mean fried noodles with a variety of bean and/or gluten based products and various vegetables and mushrooms to choose from. Basically breaffast fried noodles stall but with only vegetarian friendly options.

They are always busier on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar calendar as the more religious would avoid meat these days and patronise these vegetarian stalls.

It is not easy to differentiate which is really good as generally, they do sell pretty much the same things. I have finally found the one or two that stand out, mainly because they produce some of their own stuff.

I used to be a vegetarian twice a week, just something I set myself to do. Sadly, I didn't really come across many too memorable ones, so I am kind of struggling to find some now.

For those looking for vegetarian inspirations, section under "soya bean" and "dessert: you zha kueh" are vegetarian options too 😉😎

Fresh and tasty vegetarian treats

Jiak kaki Alan told me this place was good, my reaction to his recommendation was the same as his when someone else told him, what can be so special about a vegetarian noodle stall. He gave it a try anyway and was so impressed he comes back often despite staying very far away, and has been recommending it.

I too tried and indeed it was good. All the ingredients were fresh and meticulously prepared. Fried stuffs did not feel oily and usual boring items quite tasty. Doused in a good amount of delicious gravy (optional), it was good to go.

I just have 2 grumbles, chilli sauce was not the sambal type but the dim sum type, so lacked some excitement. Options were also limited, there were only 6 items, 5 were given to me; the omitted fried spring roll had to be ordered as an added item.

While complaining to him that though it was good, it wasn’t fantastic, I found out from Alan that he always declined the gravy and preferred dry bee hoon. On my next visit I too declined the gravy. WOW…. The dried version was MUCH better. Fried bee hoon had this very fragrant taste that is found in all good fried vegetarian bee hoon. All the ingredients, being fried stuff, suited the dry noodle better too. Previously it was good, now it is as fantastic as rumour has it!

The crispy fried dough, nicknamed Crispy or “Cui Cui”, and commonly known by the true vegetarian’s cringey name of “mock/vegetarian goose”, was indeed crunchy crisp with good savoury taste. A softer version was puffy soft, marvellous.

Unforgettable and addictive was the fried bee hoon, with a brilliant fragrance that would be numbed if it was doused with the sauce. It had a wonderful taste that came with good vegetarian bee hoon, I believe it could be of Chinese yam, but not too sure. It was so good that other jiak kaki Yao is now singing praises of this place and often yearn for it, so we now come here often with Alan!

Excellent crispy fried crispy

Really. What do we call this...? Hmmm.... Fried beancurd skin? I think it's made of flour!

Mock goose... Not the most palatable name for a vegetarian's spiritual mind set, but literally very palatable, especially the ones here.

By far the most popular dish in every vegetarian stall, the ones here were excellent. Other items were more ordinary, but of good standard.

They bear the same name as another stall that in my mind is the best on offer for vegetarian fried bee hoon, I suspect they are related as I see very similar preparations and cooking styles, especially for the crisps.

Well worth a go here if you feel spiritual and kind to animals!
