Chee cheong fun (ccf) is the term normally used for what is simply known as cheong fun (chang fen), is a common dim sum item. There are 2 types of ccf in Singapore, the Hong Kong style ccf is usually made to order at hawker stalls, wraps char siew, prawns or scallop, served with a thin layer of sweetened soy sauce mixture. The local style of ccf would be cut rice rolls, each roll about 6 inches long, and cut into pieces. Served with sweet sauce and chilli sauce added as condiments, sesame seeds, dashes of cooking oil and sometimes green onions are added too.

Chee Cheong Fun

Aug 2020

Made to order Chee Cheong Fun (CCF, rice rolls), served plain, with char siew, prawns or scallops. So far, this is the best in town. (Mar'23 update) They now have a total of 4 outlets, address below.

First, served with generous portion of sesame seeds that give the ccf fragrance, I never realized how much I like biting into some sesame seeds until then. Next, the sauce base has a deliciously sweet undertone to give the plain ccf an etra boost in taste. Finally, the thickness of the ccf was just right, soft and so silky smooth I felt like slurping it from the spoon right down the throat; but that would mean it wouldn’t stay in your mouth long enough for you to enjoy the tastiness of the sauce, and sesame seeds…

The only let down would be the chilli, it was ordinary.

(CCF) - Pin Wei 12.jpg

The char siew ccf was fantastic too, with generous amounts of very tasty char siew. The combination of thickly diced char siew in a soft ccf, with the delicious sauce, and sesame seed, it was heaven in a mouthful! The char siew combined very well with the ccf, very good char siew by itself too. This is a must try.

(CCF) - Pin Wei 2.jpg
(CCF) - Pin Wei 11.jpg

The prawns and scallop options were not too bad either, good sized prawns and scallops. Prawns and scallops are generally less tasty, so for me, it is not as interesting as the char siew option; but it gives a different texture and I am sure many others will love it. Let me know after you’ve given it a try!

Freshly Made HK Chee Cheong Fun

Serving Hong Kong style ccf (Chee Cheong Fun or rice rolls), with some very innovative ingredients like otak, century egg, pickled turnip, egg and pork liver, on top of the usual char siew, prawns and scallops.

(CCF) - Freshly Made 1.jpg
(CCF) - Freshly MadeCCF 17.jpg

The ccf itself is nice and soft, the soy sauce base lacks a bit of taste, the chilli too won’t be wining them awards, but this is made up by the interesting ingredients.

The otak and century egg options are probably the best from this stall.

The ccf with egg is a little bland.

The char siew, prawns and scallops are decent to good.

The pickled turnip ccf, just feels like a normal one with some pickled turnip as garnishing but I like it, just that with tiny pieces of pickled turnip, some bites could feel a little bit hollow.

Pork liver ccf is not bad, very well prepared.

They also serve a decent variety of porridge, but I think the star of this place is their prawn roll. They’d always ask if you want to try with any other order, but as I waited, I noticed a lot of orders, especially take away uncooked ones, for the prawn roll so I went back on my earlier rejection to try their prawn roll.

The prawn rolls were home-made, tasted fresh, was very crunchy and had a good umami taste. Filled with meat, prawns and water chestnut. The water chestnut gave out all kinds of freshness, freshness in taste and feel, the meat and prawns the good taste. They use about 20kg of water chestnuts a week to make these, it has to be a lot of hard work and they are pretty proud of their product! Deservedly so!

Despite the lacklustre review, I do rate this ccf stall, and has returned numerous times. It is more than decent and well worth a try.

Chee Cheong Fun, Porridge

Aug 2021

Deliciously Bland, tastelessly scrumptuous…

I will bet my bottom dollar on Chef Leung being from Hong Kong. The base taste for most everything here is “bland”. This is not a slight, just that it’s not like other local dishes where the taste is very more intense.

I had the char siew and original chee cheong fun, and the pork rib with century egg porridge here. The porridge is hands down the most delicious. I can’t get enough of it!

(CCF) - Chef Leung 1.jpg

The chee cheong fun or rice roll itself is soft and nice, comes in thick rolls for you to enjoy layers of dense but thin rice rolls. The sauce is on the bland side, as are the rolls; the char siew could be of better quality too. The plain roll is plain, and I was asked if I wanted sesame sauce on it. I ordered the plain one because the photos look fantastic with drizzles of what looked like cheese sauce, turns out its sesame… the mother and son both laughed with me when I “complained” it wasn’t cheese…

With the thickness of the roll and the wonderful texture of the rice rolls, the plain roll is naturally wonderful. Taste wise it is pretty normal, but it has wonderful texture.

(CCF) - Chef Leung 5.jpg
(CCF) - Chef Leung 7.jpg

The porridge came in a big bowl, burp. Spring onion and century egg pieces filled the tiny gaps of space not occupied by a two finger thick portion of pork rib and some prawn and seafood paste. Porridge is the typical Cantonese porridge that’s more watery, it was typically bland, but I felt something as it was washed down the throat. Then the taste kicks in! It has a fantastic strong yet subtle aftertaste that was boiled into the porridge, I couldn’t stop downing it.

The pork rib was very tasty and meaty too, the prawns flavourful, slightly on the fishy side, likely from the seafood paste it was mashed with. It was uniquely one of the best bland porridge I have ever tasted!

(CCF) - Chef Leung 2.jpg
(CCF) - Chef Leung 6.jpg
(CCF) - Chef Leung 8.jpg

Conclusion is that this a chee cheong fun stall that serves better porridge than ccf. Don’t get me wrong, the rice roll itself was wonderful, I can imagine the hard work and skill required by Chef Leung to come up with this quality of rice rolls, and we should enjoy it; but I think there are better char siew ccf out there in terms of overall taste. The porridge, however, was excellent, undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable ones out there.

Desserts, Milk Pudding, Chee Cheong Fun

Dec 2020

Excellent Chinese desserts, and the best chee cheong fun in town!

Tucked away along the side of The Flow@East Coast, facing the main entrance to Indigo Hotel and Holiday Inn, this place is invisible as you go through the main East Coast Road, which is a pity as it is quite a nice place.

Nice decorations, with a loft on top of the kitchen, this place screams cozy, furnished by old school sofas and Chinese wooden stools and table, it is nice despite the obvious replicas rather than real vintage stuff.

They serve an array of Chinese desserts like milk pudding, mango sago, herbal jelly, sagos, glass jelly, glutinous rice balls, some fruit milk teas and their signature milk + ginger dessert, and a scrumptuous chee cheong fun! The desserts come plain, or you can add some fruits or ginko nuts etc.

The milk pudding had a nice texture, smooth and soft, very easy to like, with a bit of a mily aftertaste (duh?), which I did not really like. The mango sago was rich and sweet, flavourful, when I had that, I just continued enjoying whilst my company chatted away complementing, no time to waste on good food!

The “clash milk’, or milk plus ginger, is something I believe one must try. Ginger has never been a personal favourite of mine so it took me a few visits before I took the plunge, despite friends and family raving about it. It’s actually no surprise that I found it brilliant! The ginger taste was subtle, as well the milk taste. It felt diluted yet rich, its texture a slight curdle of milk. After a few slurps with the tiny spoon provided, I decided to drink straight off the bowl! I think they should provide the Chinese soup spoon instead of the metal teaspoon… bigger gulps...

Despite the brilliance of their dessert, the best thing on offer here is actually their chee cheong fun! You have a choice of sweet or savoury ccf, savoury would be just soy sauce, oil and sesame seeds. The sweet version comes with a very tasty sweet sauce, and subtle chilli sauce with fragrant sesame oil. Being a big ccf fan, I find this the best I’ve tasted. The fragrance of the sesame oil goes very well with the sweet sauce, it is umami to the max too. This is the item I must order whenever I visit. In fact, whenever this place is mentioned, it’s the first thing I think about! 10/10 for the ccf, 9/10 for the rest…. Maybe it’s 11/10 for the ccf….

With such a variety of desserts on offer, there is bound to be something for everyone here, if it still does not fit your taste, go for the mighty ccf!

A new outlet has opened at Maxwell, good for a stopover while visiting Chinatown! We learned from the staff at this place that when the milk pudding is ready, the spoon would float on it!

Chee Cheong Fun

Sep 2021

I love my chee cheong fun (CCF), and when I saw a long line for this, like lemmings to the cliff, I just joined the Q, no questions asked. A few months after writing this review, while chatting with a few other hawkers, this stall has curiously been mentioned as being one of the best around for CCF, accolades from peers is praise indeed!

(CCF) - Teck Hin Delicacies 1.jpg

First, I’m not sure why this place has the name in the plural when they sell only one product…. One trick pony, one hit wonder, emphasis on wonder! I later heard from some aunties that they sell porridge too but have yet to see anyone coming from that stall with anything else other than ccf.

Next, the serious. The ccf is not made at the stall, sauced based ccf seldom are. And this place sells nothing but ccf doused in sweet sauce, soy sauce, sesame seed, oil and chilli sauce. Your choice is simple:

  1. Small or big;

  2. Which of the 5 condiments you don’t want  *suggestion: ask for less salt, or soy sauce

The CCf itself is nice and smooth, almost perfect, thickness just right, and packed in good thick rolls for each roll of ccf to give you a good bite and feel. Sauces are made in house. The sweet sauce is pretty regular, tends a little to the salty side. The uncle can be quite heavy handed with the soy sauce and sesame seeds, so it can turn out saltier than you wish, but quite fragrant and nice if you’re into the wonderful sesame seed!

The chilli sauce is spicy enough to start a bit of a sweat, and more than decent. It is less the smooth sauce type and would look comfortable in a char siew rice stall.

(CCF) Teck Hin Delicacies 3.jpg
(CCF) Teck Hin Delicacies 4.jpg

All in all, I’m very happy after eating this. And from the look of the Q and the people around, I’m not alone. Go for it! And when you order, my advice would be to ask for less soy sauce….

Smooth and tasty chee cheong fun (ccf), serving size slightly bigger than the usual ones around.

Opening to much fanfare, I understood this to be a very popular stall with rumours of hour long Qs. I was there one morning at 930 and surprisingly, they were already open, with no crowd. I almost tumbled in my rush to give this a try. Went for the plain and char siew ccf, and a lor mai kai (lmk) for later.

(CCF) - Sing Lung 1.jpg

The plain ccf is Hong Kong style, comes with peanut butter sauce instead of the usual sweet sauce here. The peanut butter gravy is slightly diluted but sweet and creamy when mixed with the basic soy sauce that comes with it. The ccf itself is wonderful, good thickness but is soft and smooth. Very enjoyable.

(CCF) - Sing Lung 5.jpg

The char siew ccf is pretty decent, the char siew is lacking a bit of punch, as well the soy sauce, and the chilli. The star of this combo is definitely the ccf itself, all in all, a good eat.

(CCF) - Sing Lung 7.jpg
(CCF) - Sing Lung 8.jpg

The lmk is ok, nothing to write home about really, I’d probably give it a miss next time.

(CCF) - Sing Lung 9.jpg

All in all, one of the better ones around.

Chee Cheong Fun, Breakfast

Jun 2021

This stall has been around since before I started working. Having grown up eating chee cheong fun almost daily, I have been eating here now and then for the lovely simple chee cheong fun with sweet and chilli sauce. Besides ccf, they offer yam cakes, pumpkin cakes and other local breakfast.

If you’re not sure where it is, just walk along the road and look for the corner stall with a Q… LOL. It always has a Q but the wait is not too long.

(Bfast) - Luan Jie 1.jpg

All the cakes and goodies are made by them, funny thing is, the item that I’ve been coming here for, ccf. So this time, I tried their pumpkin cake too, which is nice and sweet and has a good chunky pumpkin taste!

The sweet sauce that goes with the ccf, or yam cake (pumpkin cake you don’t really need to add sweetness to it!) is deliciously “lacking”. I always ask for more, and despite their best efforts, there always seemed to be insufficient! Sweet and umami, it is pretty decent, one of the better ones!
