Curry puffs are local snack (or sometimes dessert for me....) that is like a palmed sized mini calzone wrapped in pastry. Different variants of curry puffs have either, potato, potato and egg, potato and chicken (and egg), sardine, yam. Some offer otak (fish paste), or vegetarian items too.

Puffs from Malay stalls usually have a hard crispy pastry crust, termed epok epok. Those from Chinese operators would have more flaky and softer crust. Each have its own merits and we crave for different types depending on mood....

Curry Puff

Dec 2022

Excellent crispy skin curry puffs! Eat it while it’s cooled though….

I have wanted to give this stall a try when one day I picked up a passenger here at the Bedok Corner Food Centre. Fragrance filled the car and the passenger said she was helping her aunt prepare curry puffs for her stall, and the stall has long Qs throughout the day!

(Curry Puff) Yangs Epok Epok 1.jpg

On my third try, I finally got to taste it. They start selling at 10+am but the best seller potato puffs are sold out in the blink of an eye, the next batch will be available at around 11am, no Qs but I was stalking nearby after buying the remaining sardine puff and the many vegetable puffs available. I noticed that customers come by now and then and seem to be taking away puffs that were not displayed.

I came to order but were told there is a back log of orders they were trying to fulfil, thankfully my miserable 2 puff order didn’t cause much delays to their back log and the kind lady gave them to me! So if you’re here and need to buy many, please place your multiple orders in advance, or try your luck if you’re just buying the odd one or two…. Good luck though if you do not possess the same good looks as yours truly….

I had a mee rebus from the stall while stalk waiting for the potato puffs, it was decent. The taste was robust and flavourful so it’s a good option to have while sta, I mean waiting….

(Curry Puff) Yangs Epok Epok 2.jpg

Next, one bite into the vegetable puff and I knew why there were so many available. It’s really terrible! Filled with bean sprouts inside, it is strong with the bean sprout smell. Many hawkers in Singapore will ask if you want bean sprouts if their item contains it, I know some people hate the taste and smell of bean sprout. I’m happy with it, but those in the puffs, it’s overwhelming, almost with a rancid taste, I couldn’t bear it. I’m sorry Kak Yang… it’s really bad.

(Curry Puff) Yangs Epok Epok 7.jpg

Then the sardine. I’m no vampire but it was love at first bite. Didn’t even have much sardine in my bite but I was as deep in love as when I first met the boss… lovely crispy skin that is so tasty you can eat it on its own. The crispiness is the best I’ve bitten into! Crispy with a very nice bite, perfect weight on the thin line between tough and soft! Onto the sardine, it is the best sardine puff I’ve ever tasted! Quite spicy, it is nicely filled up with sardine, like pulled sardines. Best sardine epok ever! And its not even fresh!

(Curry Puff) Yangs Epok Epok 3.jpg

Now the fresh off the oven potato puffs. Fresh means piping hot, I realised you cannot really appreciate the excellent bite of Kak Yang’s puffs if they are too hot. My first bite here was too small a bite to really enjoy it, next bite not much better. The other potato puff was eaten later and it was more enjoyable! So eat it when cooled would be my advice here! Though it comes with the same excellent epok skin, the curry and potato don’t really agree with me. Potato seems a little bit, just a little, tough and pieces again just a little bit big; and the curry didn’t really suit my taste, I’m sure some others would disagree so I’d put it down to personal preference.

Curry Puff

Dec 2020

I recently stumbled upon this stall at the Tanjong Pagar Hawker Centre, never knew there was a Hainanese curry puff, thought err…, we, were only famous for chicken rice, and curry rice. I guess being only one quarter Hainanese, there is much I still don’t know about things Hainanese….

When I first tried this in Apr 2020, I was struck, it was probably one of the best curry puffs I’ve ever tasted! The curry puff skin is nice and crispy, the hard crispy type, not the flaky crispy. I had my second curry puff 2 hours after I bought it and it was still nice and crispy. The third one was some 6 hours later and this has lost its crispiness, my bad…

(Curry Puff) Rolina 1.jpg

The curry filling was marvellous, slightly spicy, it had nice chicken bits and a piece of egg in it. As I ate into it, I could feel that there were small chicken bits around most of the filling. Very nice and chewy. There was definitely one bigger piece of chicken meat within every puff.

The sardine was more ordinary, also slightly spicy, it went well with the puff skin and was quite a decent bite. Definitely one of the better curry puffs in town!

Freddy asked to cut the puffs for these photos, didn't care to reject, wouldn't criticize if he didn't slice it well...

Freddie liked it too much, he split the puffs, thankfully I managed to take some photos before he ate them

Besides curry puffs, they offer a decent serving of plain glutinous rice, with or without peanuts, some other kuehs, and they also prepare Chinese new year goodies like pineapple tarts for the occasion.

Tanglin Crispy

Curry Puff

Jun 2020

Their otak curry puffs are a must try! Best in the world probably! Sardine puffs with a difference.

Looking at the stall’s name, they must be very proud of their crispy curry puff skin, and it’s justified. Crispy and tasty, it’s about the only curry puff skin I finish completely owing to my subconscious need to be keto compliant….

There are now 2 stalls selling the same stuff, owing to a family dispute. I am more friendly with the one that started the new stall at 01-34, so I've only been going there since the split, everything remained the same here. The other brother is quieter, I am sure the products are of same quality. My only hope is that quarrels will be forgiven and they are good again. Prayers for them....

(Curry Puff) Tanglin Crispy Puff 2.jpg

All the puffs are prepared on the day at the stall, and constantly fried for the day so it's nice and fresh.

Their otak puff is something I would always go for. The otak is delicious, and blends nicely with their crispy skin, taste and texture wise, giving you a soft chewy texture inside their crispy crunchy skin. World Best!

The chicken curry puff is filled with tasty chicken flavoured curry but I have to say I struggle to find any chicken in it… well it is named “chicken curry” and not “curry chicken”, if you know what I mean… (ok, if anyone’s still going “huh? What saying you Ziggy?” it has chicken curry, chicken flavoured curry, not curry chicken, curry flavoured chicken!). Ok, jokes aside, you can definitely find a piece or 2 small pieces now and then. It is very tasty though.

The sardine puff, like the otak puff, gives you an excellent mix of flavour and texture that is heavenly…. It is different from the usual sardine puffs, which contains sardine flakes with onions. The ones here have chunky sardine pieces, with a piece of egg, as well potatoes. You get the taste of a normal puff but with sardine flavour, a very refreshing difference to the intense sardine flavour elsewhere.

Another plus is that this stall does not have long queues, so go over and grab a few nice puffs! Eat it hot to enjoy the maximum out of these little buggers! Eat it while it’s hot, eat it while it’s hot…. (Ziggy rap)

Marvellous curry puffs, tasty fritters.

Tucked in the far corner on the 2nd floor of Hong Lim market, this stall is unassuming and quietly popular. I would have missed it if not for the recommendation of another hawker here.

(Curry Puff) Goreng 3.jpg
(Curry Puff) Goreng 6.jpg

$1 ($1.20 since Jan 2023) for each curry puff about the size of a hand phone, this alone is promising. Crispy skin but not as crispy as the usual Malay style epok puff, there’s a slight chew to it. The filling is tasty, filled to the brim with it, not spicy, the curry puffs are a meal by itself!

The chicken puff had a small piece of chicken in it, “puas hati” (shiok or happy) as my Malay friend would say, when you bite onto it! The sardine puff was mildly spicy and surprisingly smooth, I like the ones here when I usually don’t like sardine puffs. The egg ones, wonderful for the vegetarians that consume egg I suppose…🤣

Sardine Puff

The banana fritter was not the usual goreng pisang we see (fried stick of banana wrapped in a crispy batter). It was a big brown ball more like a banana cake fried instead of baked. Texture was a gooey pulp with visible banana pieces inside, and a soft dark brown skin.  Nice. Very nice...

The vegetable fritter was some strips of onions, carrots and turnips fried with batter in a flat ball. It was nice and texture of a solid mush. Likeable.

Generally very nice, and deserves more than the slight attention its receiving. Add in the price perspective, this stall is a thumbs2 up that you just have to give a try!

Curry Puff

Excellent curry puff, I must have this as an after meal whenever I'm here!

I’d always buy snacks and desserts at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre, this curry puff, goreng pisang (now closed) and the now defunct Lao Ban bean curd (until there was a loooong Q).

(Curry Puff) Wang Wang 11.jpg
(Curry Puff) Wang Wang 12.jpg

Crispy on the outside, full of yummy goodies on the inside, the curry puff here definitely one worth eating. You’ll get a big piece of hard-boiled egg and some chicken chunks in the puff. Likewise for the sardines, black pepper chicken and yam.

Both the sardine and black pepper chicken is a bit on the spicy side, they’d make you break a sweat! Eat them hot for maximum effect, but it still tasted good the few times I brought them home to eat it as snacks for tea.

(Curry Puff) Wang Wang Curry Puff 12.jpeg
(Curry Puff) Wang Wang Curry Puff 14.jpeg

If you want to go for this, I’d suggest you go straight to them when you’re here. More often than not, there’s a registered Q where you leave your order and collect 10-20 minutes later as they prepare, don’t be misled by the lack of a physical Q! Puffs are not made to order but they often sell out.

I Dont Know

Curry Puff

Nov 2020

Excellent giant puffs! At a stall without a name...

Now, the curry puff stall without a name… should we call it No Signboard? Very original! Right? Wait, oh.. Jokes aside, their signboard pays homage to God, this is humbling and deserving of respect, understand it says "By the Grace of God".

I did ask for the name of the stall and there was a smile, a laugh and an “I don’t know”. Well, "I Don’t Know" sells the basic nasi lemak and curry puffs, loads of it! They were preparing loads of it for the day, they open from about 8am til sold out, which is around 1-2pm.

(Bfast) Heap I Dont Know 1.jpg
(Bfast) Heap I Dont Know 3.jpg

The nasi lemak is the basic one wrapped in paper, with just ikan bilis, cucumber, a small piece of omelette and sambal chilli.

The curry puffs, undoubtedly their main product, is the epok epok type with thin crispy skin and a whole lot of curry and potatoes in it, nothing else. The skin is nice and crunchy, and the filling tasty. I had the great pleasure of eating a fresh one and it was one of the best epok curry puffs. $1 each, it was a good size, bigger than my trusty old iphone 7 but not too big to be a turn off. It was well worth a try and I now know I can get a good epok curry puff at "I Don’t Know"! There by the grace of God to give you a great puff!

*now the Manic’s “There By the Grace of God” will play in my head for the next 3 days… I’m sure of it!
