Kway chap is a dish from China brought over by early migrants. Kway is a rice noodle that is cut into short braod pieces, and served in a braise soup (chap, pronounced "charp"). Usually served with pork belly meat, various offals, beancurd skin, egg and braised duck.

Orders are placed either by telling the hawker to prepare a meal for the number of persons, they would then prepare a mix of the items available suitable. Alternatively, pick and choose what you'd like to have, then tell them that is for how many persons and they would give a suitable portion, all placed in a big plate to share. If you do this, tip would be to order a portion for 2 when there are 3, this way you can order more items; but if you are not picking too many items, ordering portions according to the number consuming would be appropraite.

Intense flavour, garlicky, slowly growing on me and I get cravings to come here now

Recommended by a friend who grew up in the area, I’ve always been doubtful of this stall, but I yielded and gave it a go. There are quite a few surprises in stall. First, very friendly couple running the stall despite the owner looking like a modern gangster! Next, the price was very decent, kway chap for $3-4….

Finally, it was more than decent! Ingredients were fresh, tasted fresh and robust, it had a good strong taste, as strong as its deep dark sauces suggests.

The kicker would be the good amount of finely diced deep fried garlic. No doubt freshly fried, it added great fragrance and taste to the kway. Every mouthful would ooze the tasty goodness of these fried garlic, bursts of fragrance seemed to pop into my mouth with each bite.

All the ingredients were fresh, the taste and flavour of the gravy and soup very strong and intense. If you love a strong tasting soup, this is THE place for an intense bowl of kway chap!

It was a very pleasant and satisfying experience, growing to love this and one I highly recommend!

The fabulously fresh and fragrant fried garlic, for you to scoop all you need!

Since I've done this review, but yet publicised... the love from the public for Feng Ji has grown. They now have daily Q's stretching to the opposite end of the corridor. I happen to be the last person entitled to order this morning, at 1040am (Sunday)! I became the guardian of the Q, the lady boss nicely asked me to tell whoever came behind me that they were sold out. Tried my best, there were lapses of concentration, I don't have eyes on my back, sometimes I didn't notice someone was behind and she would patiently come over to inform the customer. Very nice people.

If you see a short Q, don't be too happy, they may have sold out! However, despite a long Q, waiting time was decent, I waited only about 20 minutes with about 15-18 persons ahead of me, with the Q stretching to the opposite side making a J.

Kway Chap

Review: Dec 2020

Fresh ingredients, refreshing taste that is subtle yet packs a punch

There are just 2 or 3 kway chap places that the Mrs. Ziggy would go to, she is fussy that way, wouldn’t eat at any old place. This is one of the “fortunate ones” and also a personal favourite of mine.

They have moved a few times, the only one location that I had not visited was the now defunct Blanco Court itself, before my time…..haha. The stall has been passed down from father to son, can’t miss the face, the young boss looks exactly like the father!

This place is popular. I doubt that they are famous for their chilli but strangely, the thing I remember most about them was their chilli. It was really nothing fantastic, slightly garlicky, not spicy, and watery; it was really nothing to write about (though I am writing about it….), it just seemed to blend well with the food here, and gave a good upgrade to the food's taste.

The pork belly was very tender, nicely cooked and not too fatty, think they choose the pork from skinnier pigs…

Mrs. Ziggy insisted that they serve the best small and large intestines, statement of fact then. Actually, don’t tell her I say this (she knows I always agree verbally even if I don’t “mindfully”) but I really think it is too. Both types of intestines nicely cooked, clean, tender and tasty.

They now serve their fish cake fried, it was not so as late as May 2020, I prefer the old version.

The kway comes in 2 sizes, I feel that kway is not something very filling and most people should just go for the bigger bowl. I was never happy with one small bowl, and I don’t recall they had a choice but this time I was given one, and I end up happier. Nice and soft, the kway is good.

The defining thing about a kway chap stall would be the soup or sauce used to cook the ingredients. The soup here was light, mildly herbal, and refreshing. It had a unique refreshing feel to it. Not over powering but just enough to add taste to all their ingredients. Sometimes, after a few mouthfuls, you’ll long for more as your taste buds are used to the taste and you need something more to excite it further, it happens here. Dab a bit more of the chilli, another dab at the sauce, and you are ok, remindeded that this is the way to enjoy food, not too much seasoning…

I probably came at a bad time to take photos of the stall, the sun was directly behind the stall and it was blinding, can I make good effects out of it? nah…. Mind the starbursts!

Lunch Q here can be about 40 mins, it’s is usually quiet until about 11am.

Kway Chap

Fresh and tasty kway chap, one of 2 local big names.

This is one of the 2 kway chap that my boss likes, the boss who doesn’t eat pork but would gulp pig innards… so when the boss says it’s good, it has to be, and actually, it is…

Usually long Q's at the stall but if you’re lucky, it can be empty around opening time. This doesn’t happen often but have been lucky once or twice. It’s weird how quiet it can be sometimes, only to see a long Q about just 5 mins later.

Run by very friendly and humorous owners, one ran in front of my phone as I was taking a photo of the shop and made a funny face 🤣. We understand this is the young boss. Orders are taken as you are queueing. Preparations efficient, complete with hi tech ordering system using ipads....

Taste wise, it is fantastic, strong nice taste with a subdued but sufficient herbal element. I will consider it having a “clear” taste. Just enough combination of the umami pork base, with a subtle herbal boost, robust but not overwhelming from either.

(Kway Chap) To-Ricos 9.jpg

Ingredients are fresh, pork, innards, bean curds all very fresh and nicely prepared and cut, cooked just nice. It is a wonderful treat and I consider it one of the best.

The thing about kway chap, I realise there is quite a range of appreciation. Some like the taste “subdued” and fresh like the ones here, some like a strong basic dark sauce taste, while some like it so clear it’s almost tasteless to me. This one here is my sweet spot!

Kway Chap

Apr 2024

Nice kway chap from a funny and friendly dude

Before the coffee shop was renovated, this stall did not have a name, its signboard simply said “kway chap”. This same signboard continues to be used!

We used to call it the "Superman Kway Chap". Chef Lee, or rather, Delivery Man Lee (his wife prepares the food while he deilvers them to tables) used to fly around and glides in with the food… He still does, just a bit less as new floors are not as worn and smooth as the aged ones previously. 😅 😅

SuperLee is super friendly too, always serves with a smile, Mrs. Lee as well. Can see that he really loves his work here!

We were told of this place by a friend, who loves to come here, for the food, not for the entertainment of seeing “slide” shows, his favourite kway chap.

Offals offered here were fresh, tender and juicy. Pigs skin, large intestines, plus the ends, stomach are all available. Their fish cake was especially tasty.

While the kway or flat rice slices came in a delicious soup that was fragrant with the inclusion of freshly deep fried shallots, which were also present with the meat and offal.

Always with a smile, Chef Lee told me they open daily, he wants to set a record of opening for 365 days! With just the 2 of them operating, Superman, and superwoman too!

Do come by to give this a try, the slide show alone is well worth the visit, having a nice meal plus help rewarding a hard working couple would make this meal pretty perfect... And super...
