Prawn noodles come in dry or soup orders.

Dry noodles come with the noodles dipped in a chilli sauce, with pork lard pieces, and fried shallots as condiments; a separate small bowl of soup comes with it.

Soup orders come with noodles and prawns (most stalls have options to include pork ribs) in a bowl of soup, fried shallots and pork lards usually accompany the soup too.

The soup is a prawn broth, and usually prawn and pork ribs are the base ingredients, with other spices making up the broth base.

Excellent prawn/lobster broth that is one of the better lobster bisque around

This prawn noodle stall is quite well known, heard about it many times; one day another hawker talked about it while having a chat. Then a few friends also mentioned, and suddenly other friends started talking about it too. One rainy day, I was passing by so… found out that rainy nights are good for a visit, Q was much shorter.

(Prawn Mee) Zion Rd 1.jpg

First thing I noticed was that they serve lobster noodle, at $22 or $25. Then a big prawn noodle at $8, 12 or 16. I tried the dried prawn noodle, for $12 I had 2 and a half big prawns, 4 chunky pieces of pork, and about 8 pieces of deep fried pork lard…

Prawns and meat came separately in a bowl of soup. The prawns were BIG… filled the entire spoon including the handle, it was fresh and nicely cooked, the pork lard and pork were at first in hiding, I only found them when the soup was almost cleared.

Speaking of soup, this is the one of the best soup I have tasted, it was more appropriate to call it a lobster bisque and I would not be too surprised if lobsters were used to make this broth. It definitely reminded me a bit of the very good lobster bisque I’ve tried elsewhere. Needless to say, I slurped up every single drop. Thick and tasty, the prawn and pork based taste wass delicious. Not only was the soup brilliant, the sauce that came with the noodles was brilliant too, slightly sweet, and very savoury, it was wonderful.

Brought my brother in law here when the sister was away on assignment. He has his favourite and from the look of his face, was sceptical when I told him this was better than the other one; but was game to try, willing to Q for it too.

Soup orders this time. I realised that for the $12, I got a mix of both BIG and smaller prawns, while his $10 dish had only small ones. Same tasty “lobster bisquey” soup, I was impressed and slurped. I noticed something “fishy” and it wasn’t the soup. My BIL was too quiet, didn’t complain about an order still outstanding that had not beeped us. When the beep sounded, he didn’t budge like he usually would, pretended to have his hands full so I went to collect. When I returned with his order of food, he confessed that the prawn noodle was better than his favourite and he couldn’t stop eating…..

On another visit, I was asked if I wanted pig skin with my orders, so that was what those were. There were some curly tasty stuff with a good nice bite. Of course I wanted!

(Prawn Mee) Zion Rd 6.jpg

Everything here is wonderful, the gravy with the dry option, the soup, the prawns and pork ribs, not forgetting the pork lard. And I believe the tastiest soup around. Lives up to his reputation, awards and accolades given. Highly recommended.

Prawn Noodles

May 2021

Love at first sight, deeply in love at first bite, excellent dry noodle and delicious soup!

A friend of mine was talking about this place and coincidentally I found myself around the area within the week, so let’s go into an industrial canteen and try it out. One word, NO-REGRETS! One word la😜😅

(Prawn Mee) Loyang Prawn 1.jpg

Loyang Stall

Bedok Stall

I don’t really like prawns so I ordered the regular sized prawn (not XL prawns that is an option here) and pork rib dry. Let’s talk about the soup first…. The ribs and prawns came in a separate big bowl of soup, so the dry version came with quite a bit of soup. It was brilliant, intense prawn and pork based, with some small amount of sambal that gave a slight orange tinge, which showed up in bubbles of oil or along the surface of the bowl. It was one step closer to the Penang style of prawn noodle. It was concentrated and delicious, a brilliant mix of prawn and pork goodness, and not spicy at all.

The noodles I ordered with chilli, so naturally a bit spicier, but with the deep fried pork lard and shallots (look at the photo below, generous amount of fried shallots were given, you can see the fragrance!), the noodle mix was so scrumptious, to borrow a quote from the late great Anthony Bourdain, “that it can be eaten on its own”. The combination was very very tasty.

(Prawn Mee) Loyang Prawn 3.jpg

The very tasty noodles

(Prawn Mee) Loyang Prawn 4.jpg

Prawns and pork ribs come separately

The prawns are of decent size, not sure how much bigger the XL ones would be! It is bigger than the little prawn, sans skin, that I prefer, but it is decent.

Saving the best for last, and yes, there is something better than the already highly recommended noodles and soup, the pork ribs! Tender and soft, it is very well cooked. Nice big chunky pieces of pork rib pieces, lots of nice tender meat. The pieces are small enough to eat it at one go but I cannot resist biting them into at least half, just to have a feel of its tenderness. It is also very tasty, salted and cooked just right.

The very tasty and tender pork ribs

Patrons can add items to our order, pork ribs and prawns, obviously; and also onsen egg, pork intestines, abalone, pork skin or sliced pork.

Should you do a takeaway, the soup and noodles are packed separately in a bowl, very interesting.

I think this is a must try prawn noodle, I’m rating it the best in Singapore. It has emerged as a possible last meal request for me. I often wonder what it would be and have a list. This is creeping up, as if I was at Changi prison waiting for the day, at least it is nearby; a sympathetic guard should easily grant me this wish… you think so too?

Prawn Noodles

Jul 2021

This is the place where I first fell in love…. With the Singapore style of prawn noodles, and century eggs…

Coming from KL and being used to the Penang style of prawn noodle, it wasn’t easy to find one in Singapore that I was used to. Then some friends brought me here, and I marked this place as the best prawn noodles in Singapore! For the longest time, this is about the only place I’d have prawn noodles, and I’d always visit whenever I come to the east. Funnily, I have not returned since moving to the east…

They have an accompanying Ngo Hiang stall here, and the same friends INSISTED I try the century egg there, despite me being a virgin with that, at 20+ years old… and I fell in love again, only to find out century eggs do not taste the same everywhere.

(Prawn Mee) Beach Road Prawn Noodle1.jpg

Prawn noodle with accompanying ngo hiang stall

The prawn noodle soup here is delicious, like a prawn bisque, thick and strong with prawn taste. Comes from a century old recipe. Currently run by the 4th generation of owners, they do this very well. It is also a place where I’ve seen celebrities and ministers visit. One visits almost on a weekly basis, not sure many would like to meet her though… 😅😅

Freshly fried shallots topping gives the soup extra punch, it does not have a lot of sambal or chilli in the soup, but they provide chilli powder at every other table so you can add to your heart’s content. Prawns are big, usually easily de-shelled without the use of my clumsy hands, and the pork ribs nice and tender.

Recently, my idea was that the prawn noodles here is 10-20% better than elsewhere, while the Ngo Hiang here is twice as good as most other places, so I would come here only for the that. This visit, the same friend that introduced me here suggested lunch here again, I was “forced” to have both. Eating the prawn noodles again had the feeling of meeting the first love after all these years, a love revived...

*Apr 2023 update: after a recent visit, I find that the ngo hiang here was very different from before, it was very disappointing and I'm afraid I don't share the views anymore

(Prawn Mee) Beach Road Prawn Noodle - Ngo Hiang3.jpg

East Coast Ngo Hiang

In the early days, people would order some ngo hiang here to kill time while waiting for the prawn noodles as the work flow then was slow; this improved and it became the ngo hiang arrived after you finished your noodles. Its popularity was such that people were willing to wait for it, and for me, it was the highlight instead of the prawn noodles! It was operated separately then by a couple, now, looks like it has been bought over by Beach Road Prawn Noodles, efficiency improved and we are back to ngo hiang arriving first….

Ngo hiang and prawn roll

(Prawn Mee) Beach Road Prawn Noodle - Ngo Hiang8.jpg

The excellent century egg

Quality remains exactly the same, the century egg remains one of the better ones in town, its ngo hiang (both pork and prawn) are also marvellous; their prawn crackers as well. Their pumpkin slice, another item I learned to like from here, remains exceptional and one of the better ones in town with a crisply fried surface and tender delicious cake within, the fish fillet deserves a mention too.

There is another item that I learned to eat here, the wuxiang sausage roll, this led me to try, and since love, Chinese sausage so it was a big deal. The sausage is clean and fresh, meat within tender yet dry and not mushy. It’s not easy to make, they don’t just make it, they excel at this.

For years this has been my favourite, so much so that I come here for the ngo hiang instead of the prawn noodles. If you’re here, give all my first loves a try!

Da Dong

Prawn Noodle

Review: Dec 2020

Very nice soup, wish they give more with each bowl...

A popular prawn noodle stall at Joo Chiat, I was here at 9am and was left with only 2 tables, under the warming sun or under the warming sun but behind a pillar, no brainer. Waited about 20 mins for the food, which was table served. Often we have to share tables and I've met people who come from far away places just to eat this, one lady claims to do this every week!

(Prawn Mee) Da Dong 113.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Da Dong 10.jpg

The first thing that hit me when the prawn noodles arrived was the lack of soup, the bowl was in shallow soup! Must be precious stuff! The first sip of the soup and I could understand why, it was tasty, full of nice prawn flavour that you can savour, Ziggy and poetry is perfect chemistry, I digress…

Next thing I know, I was hit by a blow,

For as I gulped, celery filled my buds!

Those that love celery, this place would be merry,

I’m sure there are many, but not me.

For $5.50, noodles were plenty,

The size of the prawns too was healthy,

Not too big, just nice to make me happy!

For those that ask for pork ribs, do beware,

My order of prawn and ribs, had no ribs anywhere….

If it suffices, instead of ribs you get pork slices.

In the end, the tasty soup did make amends,

For despite the celery, my bowl ended empty!

Which was quite easy, as there was barely any.....

(Prawn Mee) Da Dong 20.jpg

Another visit, tried the dry version this time, not sure why but this place inspires poetry….

Dry me a river,

The dry mee gives me a shiver…

Sweet sambal chilli that is tastier than ever,

Was what they delivered!

The prawns and meat,

May be a tasty treat;

They were too few to call a group

But I did get a little full bowl of soup!

Met a lady here from shanghai,

Shared a table after we said hi.

She comes every week here,

So the message is pretty clear,

The food here a blast like nuclear!

Even though the price is dear!

Prawn Noodle

Review: Mar 2021

Not that I’m a big fan of prawn noodles, but this is my selected go to place for it. I just like the subtlety and serenity around this place, parking is also slightly easier! Started as a road side hawker in the 50’s, it has now been passed on down to James, 3rd generation owner of this proud tradition.

(Prawn Mee) Traditional Prawn Mee 2.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Traditional Prawn Mee 5.jpg

The coffee shop where this stall is

This time, I’m back after a long absence, deciding to write something on them. Intending to order a soup noodle but something got hold of me as I was ordering and decided on the dried version, maybe it’s my superb peripheral visions (as all good footballer should have, and well…. I think I am, the odd team mate may disagree) catching a glimpse of those around eating the dry.

(Prawn Mee) Traditional Prawn Mee 7.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Traditional Prawn Mee 9.jpg

The small bowl of soup that came with it was full of prawn flavour, a little too prawny for my liking but I finished it anyways, it was quite good. The dried prawn noodle was delicious! Nice home recipe chilli, just subtle enough not to be too spicy, just enough to make me sweat a little, it went well with the noodles and the little soup base at the bottom. At $4-6, they gave only shrimps, not the big giant prawns, de-shelled… wonderful, that's  the way I like it (aha-aha…).

This is part of the reason why I like this place, I don’t really like big prawns where you have to peel, I’m lazy. Comes with a piece or 2 of pork rib with the $5 order too.

If you order the soup noodle, you'd miss out on having the delicious concentrated chilli, I'd have the dry version here.

This place was by no means quiet, as I was tucking in, a steady stream of customers would come in, they were quite popular, give it a go if like me, you don’t like to peel.

Blanco Court

Prawn Noodles

May 2021

A friend of mine loves the prawn noodles here, despite living within walking distance of another, which I understand is related to this one.

(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 1.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 2.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 3.jpg

I ordered the dry bee hoon with normal prawns and pork ribs. This way, I get to try the dried version, with some soup, I can extrapolate and vision what the soup version is like! The dried bee hoon was nothing to shout about, their chilli mix was just decent. The prawns were of decent size, and the pork ribs just ok, all pretty good.

The soup, however, was excellent! Which was what my friend had been raving about. It was well roundeds and delicious, a yummy prawn and pork rib taste, with added fragrance of a dash of sambal. Brilliant!

(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 4.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 5.5.jpg

The soup was so good, I could not resist a return the next day… The soup version was definitely nicer, dense with prawn and pork taste, with a hint of sambal chilli. Needless to say, not a drop was left.

(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 20.jpg

This shop also has a ngo hiang stall in the coffee shop. East Coast Ngoh Hiang. To read about them, please visit:

We understand from talks that this place is related to the Beach Road prawn noodles. It's not surprising, same excellent basic taste and set up, they've tweaked their styles slightly to suit different tastes.

(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 8.jpg

(Prawn Mee) Blanco Court 22.jpg

The conclusion here is that if you are here, go for the soup, you won’t miss anything not ordering the dried version while the soup is excellent.

Chung Ching

Chilli Noodle, Prawn Noodle, Laksa

Jul 2021

Very nice chilli, goes very well with the prawn noodle and laksa

First, the opening hours stated at the stall says 2pm to 10pm, the hours indicated above is what I got when I asked the lady owner. We were there at 810pm and were one of the last customers. So I believe you should trust me. At your own risk….. 😜😜

Brought the boss here for dinner and when we walked past, both of us were attracted, but I had other places in mind, only to find those in mind were closed that evening, so we doubled back.

(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 1.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 18.jpg

As I approached the second time, I saw someone come away with a beautiful bowl of prawn mee. The choice was obvious, and the boss, loyal as ever, stuck to the initial attraction of the laksa.

The soup that came with the prawn noodle was strangely bland yet tasty. I would describe it as tasteless but I kept going for more. There was this subtle umami there with a tinge of brilliant aftertaste.

The dried prawn mee, which I believe was also the chilli mee, tasted as brilliant as it looked. The chilli was not spicy but savoury (it is sold in sealed packets, the silver packs you see in front of the stall). Came with nice sized prawns and pork ribs. Prawns were crunchy, de-shelled and of a good size, the pork ribs were tender, meaty and tasty. The $5 bowl had 2 prawns and 3-4 rib pieces. You would have a choice of an array of noodles, including mee pok (Chinese fettuccine) or mee kia (Chinese spaghetti) on top of the usual yellow noodle and rice noodles (see bottom right of right photo above).

(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 4.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 6.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 5.jpg

The laksa was a little bit on the gingery side, I love a laksa with skinny yellow noodles, they have this option here and that was enough for me to like it! A $4 bowl came with an egg, 2 crunchy prawns, and one piece of the delicious pork rib, plus some fish cakes and bean curd skin, it was a good deal. Not as lemak or creamy as I would have liked but it was a good offer. Do ask for the chilli with the laksa as it definitely will spice it up!

(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 11.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 16.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Chung Cheng 17.jpg

The chilli mix is the star attraction of this stall and it was wonderful. More like a sauce than “chilli” as it was not at all spicy but more savoury with a plethora of fragrances.

Started by the current owner's father in the 60’s as a street hawker along North Bridge Road just behind this food centre, they moved here since this place started. As the humble lady boss proudly proclaimed, their son will take over the reins soon, he is currently helping out at the stall. Long may this tradition continue!

Hock

Prawn Noodles

Jul 2021

24 hour prawn noodle stall, have a good one any time of the day.

A prawn noodle place for the owls and the worm getters alike, this 24/7 stall sits at the corner of Dickson Road and Jalan Besar. A favourite place of another stall owner, who is undoubtedly a night owl from his description, he thinks this is the best prawn noodle stall in Singapore, “at least at that hour”….

(Prawn Mee) Hock 2.jpg

I’ve heard about Qs at a prawn noodle place along Jalan Besar and was happy to come on a heightened alert morning to find just myself and the stall uncle at the coffee shop. Further surprise was that Hock sells pork intestines with the prawn noodles.

The dry variety came with lots of chilli, which was not too spicy, not only was it plenty, it was also very yummy! Though the prawns are slightly mini, it’s the nicely de-shelled variety, with quality! 😎

The ribs were delicious and tender, pork intestines’ bite does not differ; both so nice to the bite it can make one shudder. If the photos make you wonder, whether the chilli was indeed a wonder, look no further, it too, will make you sigh as you finish, with the word “Power!” 🤣😜

(Prawn Mee) Hock 4.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Hock 6.jpg
(Prawn Mee) Hock 7.jpg

The soup was slightly mellow, clear in taste but easy to swallow, a little citric in taste and a tiny bit hollow, it’s not exactly something worth a follow. There wasn't any of the chilli with the soup prawn noodle, so the soup version lacked punch, i can't say it would rule the world.

Generally, not bad, especially the chilli, not sure if you can sleep after a 130am bite of it though! if you're here, you are strongly advised to go dry....

(Prawn Mee) Hock 13.jpg
