The best Soy Sauce Chicken in town! Served with noodles or rice. Vegetables, Prawn Dumplings or Wanton add-ons optional.
When the Michelin awards were first announced and there was a Soy Sauce Chicken among the list, I had assumed they were the ones. Only question in my mind was which one as there were 2 of them, a few shops apart. This one is run by the grandson of the founder, while the other one was run by his uncle, who has since retired and sold the business.

Thomas is the young man running the show but the standard of the chicken, and sauce, has maintained; owing to his meticulous inspection of the cooking process of both. He is in the kitchen early in the morning to ensure that the chicken is cooked the way it should, giving them their trademark tenderness. A friend of mine, an ardent red meat consumer, had declared that Chew Kee’s chicken breast is the only breast he would eat (things have changed since he had a heart condition though… he is well and strong still!). The secret dark sauce gives you great satisfaction with each bite.

The chicken is presented separately with a rice order, a generous amount of cucumber is served with it. Soaked in the dark soy sauce, when we order a half or whole chicken to share, my friends and I would fight and scramble for these little cool slices! They tend to finish before the odd pieces of chicken…. This is testament to how good the sauce is. Not too salty as the name seems to suggest, there is a hint of sweetness, the sauce is watery rather than thick. This means that the sauce is not overwhelming but just adds its taste to the chicken subtly even if you submerge the chicken in the sauce.
Every order of the chicken comes with a generous portion of sauce, you might fight for the cucumbers but I have never seen any fully consumed plate that doesn’t have plenty of the sauce left.

The noodle comes in a generous dose of soy sauce as well, the chicken is served with the noodle instead of on a separate plate. The noodles are quite springy, generally a very good choice, most people I come here with would opt for the noodles. I usually eat it with rice as I love pouring a huge portion of the soy sauce onto my rice so that every bite is filled with a good amount of sauce.
The rice served here is also pretty good, with a fragrance that is comparable to the more famous Hainanese chicken rice around. Another reason why despite the noodles being good, I always prefer o have it with rice.

Prepared fresh each day, the chicken is cooked to perfection, allowing it to keep its moisture and tenderness, soaked in the delicious sauce, every piece of chicken has the delicious taste of the soy sauce seemingly infused in it. The chicken is also chopped into good bite sizes, so that you can soak it with more sauce; delicious even without extra soaking due to the careful attention paid during cooking,

The prawn dumpling is nicely filled and it’s enjoyable, decently priced too; dipped in their brand of chilli, which is available for consumption in a tray of utensils and condiments, is delicious too. The chilli is also interestingly one that I would dabble a little, despite the fact that I don’t usually take extra condiments with my food. I respect the chef and eat things as they are….. 😎
They have recently added siew yoke or roast pork to their menu, this is quite good too, definitely worth mentioning it here.
Chew Kee is definitely a place that I am motivated to go every now and then. Another friend of mine who works overseas claims that he must visit Chew Kee every time he comes back, and he comes back quite often, at least every other month!
Just wish the Michelin judges had the same taste buds as mine, and with Chew Kee’s many other customers! Franchises or branches may appear soon, this is likely to be the other Chew Kee. I used to be unable to tell the difference between the 2, but since the takeover, the taste is quite distinct!

Tucked in a corner of Telok Blangah, this is actually a pretty popular hawker centre with a few “in demand” stalls. On a day I didn’t feel like queueing up, I opted for this, which I think I might still choose even if the whole place was empty.
My friend Ah Long claims that another friend of his would travel “all the way here” for this soy sauce chicken as we were staring at the freshly made plates of noodles. Let’s see if it was worth it!

The first thing we noticed was that the noodles were springy and different, it had a nice texture and bite, slightly crunchy. The chicken was tender and juicy, the soy sauce subtle, light and well rounded; together these made a delicious plate of soy sauce chicken noodle! My breakfast mate Ah Long gave the thumbs up to the stall owner Ah Long, his "doppelganger"! 😆😆
I may not travel “all the way” for this, but if I’m around the area, this will definitely be a choice. Should Friend Ah Long offer to treat, I'll drive a long long way here for Long Soy Sauce Noodle!
