Western Food in Singapore's hawker centres would sell “western dishes" like steaks, pork chops, lamb chops, chicken chops and fish and chips. Usually they come in combo's with sides of fries or mash; coleslaws or salads, and maybe a bun. Some more millennia ones would offer you a choice of sides. Traditional ones were started by mostly Hainanese chefs. For simplicity, I have included burger and hot dog joints in this category.

Out of this world chicken burger, and the rest are top notch too
Started by a group of young people, blackgoat really hit the ground running. Fikri the chef learned the skills from his stint at the wonderful prime meat joint Burnt Ends, and his products are scrumptious.
The variety here is not fantastic, 3 types of beef, rump cap, ribeye, and striploin; a lamb rack, chicken and beef burger, and a dessert. Plus a salad.
%20Blackgoat%2017.jpg)
Probably the outstanding is the cheapest on offer, the fried chicken burger. Fried to perfection, extremely crispy yet retaining its succulence. Has an absolute belter of a crust, excessively tasty, full of spicy goodness, not chilli spicy but tasty spicy. Then doused in a lovely dip sauce. Brilliant.

The hamburger was not far away, tasty with a punch, very thick, munchy, and complimented with a scrumptious sauce at the bottom and melted cheese on top.
The fries here, though, made me decide to safe the buck and reduce my carbo intake for the day….

Some of their signature salad came with an order of steak, great, I don’t have to order one to review it, has to be something as I see many customers ordering it. The croutons were like me, stocky and burly in appearance, but tasted wonderful! Well, like me. It was crunchy and broke up easily when we tried to fork it. The salad dressing was balsamic, a nice gentle dose of sweetness making it a perfect company.

The ribeye was so tender I could have mistaken it for a tenderloin, grilled perfectly over charcoal, a good layer of charcoal burnt fragrance with my medium rare done to perfection. Well done Chef Fikri! At $37 for a 260g piece, it was by no means cheap, but definitely well grilled and a great piece of steak worthy of high end establishments.

Medium rare ribeye

Medium rare ribeye
%20Blackgoat%2029.jpg)
Medium rare sirloin
The rump cap was more affordable, it was also grilled brilliantly in the hands if Fikri. However, a rump is still a rump. The layer of fats adding wonderful taste no doubt, it was tender enough but using tender might be a stretch. I would say it was just about worth the price.
Steak sauces are available for purchase to go with the steaks, I have tried their Creamy garlic sauce, it was good, very intense in taste, if I’m not wrong, dijon mustard was the base, has a slight hint of sweet. It was good but not irresistable, I would be happy to have my steak without sauces.

The lamb rack was grilled to perfection. I was impressed the moment they asked how I wanted my lamb done. Medium please.
And medium it was, maybe a little medium rare but it was brilliant. Extremely tender and fresh, with just that bit of fats, for taste, and a small piece of bone. Lamb came with a sambal sauce, which was mildly spicy, and much more savoury than spicy. The taste of fresh chilli was present, I am still unsure I liked it, it was a bit of a fusion sambal. It tasted better and then I lost interest in the taste, it just went up and down.
At $23 for 285g of lamb it was not cheap hawker food, but the quality was such I think it was well worth my buck.

Blackgoat is fantastic. Weekday evenings seems to be a better time to visit. This from my visits as well their anticipation judging by the work force deployed. 7 on weekends to 4 on weekdays!
The system here is that you get a Q number when you approach them before 530. You’d then be asked to form a Q according to numbers around 530 and the Q forms thereafter! I've been here at around 7 on a weekday, straight to ordering, while on a weekend, I was here at 515pm and had Q number 8! Bon appetite!

Wonderful pork chop that would look comfortable in a fine dining restaurant!
I almost had the pleasure of being the skinny chef’s first customer when they shifted over from Clementi to Kallang, but my friend who brought me there got the day mixed up and we were one day early, got to meet Lun, who is indeed skinny…. (the Kallang Branch has since closed)
%20Skinny%20Chef%204.jpg)
Tried the double mix of chicken and lamb chop with chicken gravy, and sides of onion rings and coleslaw. Coleslaw was decent, big serving for a side, almost didn’t want to finish it; the onions were a bit meh, might be better if they stay in the deep fryer a while longer!
The lamb chop was a bit thin but succulent and flavourful, a nice cut and very well prepared, thoroughly enjoyable with just that bit of fats to give you the hearty lamb flavour. The chicken chop was very juicy, the moisture very well retained in the meat, very fresh, also very well prepared. It went very well with the, uhm, chicken gravy, the gravy soaking onto the skin of the chicken chop boosting its taste to another level. I have to say, the chicken gravy didn’t quite fit the lamb chop as nicely, guess I can’t complain they didn’t give any hints...
%20Skinny%20Chef%205.jpg)
%20Skinny%20Chef%208.jpg)
I was impressed and came back to give their signature cutlet a try. Brought a friend along who had the lamb chop. Good, we shall see if it’s different when you order it as a mix.
The lamb chop was the same, this time it seemed to be better grilled. We both had the mac and cheese as a side dish and this is worth a mention. It had some cherry tomatoes in it, they provided a juicy and sweet after taste that was refreshing. My other side dish was a big portion of sautéed mushrooms, had a bit of the raw mushroom taste which was unpleasant.
Onto the signature cutlet! The skin was not the hard crispy crunch that I had expected, it was more soft crunchy, loved it. I don’t like it hard, teeth going weak and all that… the meat inside was surprisingly succulent and “un-dry”, they manage to retain quite a bit of moisture which is commendable. Sprayed with lots of cheese on top, it was delicious. A giant piece that filled almost the entire 11” plate, we can argue that it was worth the $9 price tag. You also get a sous-vide egg (makes you wonder if everything else is done this way too…) and 2 side dishes of very generous portions.

The best item here would be their pork collar chop! Succulent and scrumptious, as I ate, I felt like I was tasting a pork chop from a fine dining place. Meat was well marinated and tender, very impressive and I have to recommend this to be their best dish instead of the cutlet. It may not be as big a piece but the quality of the meat and the taste is top notch.
%20Skinny%20Chef%2016.jpg)
%20Skinny%20Chef%2020.jpg)
The fish and chips here was also nice, pretty juicy meat with a crunchy nice batter. Another worthy mention would be the fried salmon belly, it may not sound right but it was absolutely fabulous. deliciously juicy salmon belly trapped inside a nice crispy batter. The combination yielded a very interesting texture. I can't recommend this enough!

%20Skinny%20Chef%2039.jpg)
Likewise, the fried spring chicken was by now unsurprisingly succulent too, crispy batter covering moist and tasty meat, it was good! The so-called spring chicken must be of a giant breed, growing up to be a giant chicken! It was definitely bigger than KFC's grown chickens! Was quite hungry (read greedy) when I ordered this and thought I’d finish it but ended up taking away almost half a chicken…
%20Skinny%20Chef%2033.jpg)

The burgers were slightly more ordinary, the buns pretty dry and uninspiring, the crispy chicken patty had the usual Skinny Chef succulence and more than decent but the whole package was just about average. The pulled pork burger can fit the same description, with the pulled pork slightly less appetising….

Friting frites! Crispy on the outside, soggy inside, they were tastelicious! Ok, frites are supposed to be double fried in animal oil, so would naturally be crispier and tastier, the frites here are fried in vegetable oil though….. I always eat my frites first before my burger as I like them crispy and hot. With age, I now eat just a little and move on to the burger with more than half to spare; the frites here were so good, I almost forgot to move on to the burger.
%20Burger%20Frites%202.jpg)
%20Burger%20Frites%2013.jpg)
I finally did, the burger was thick and juicy. Nice soft bun with chunky patty in the middle. At the heart of the burger, my taste buds were bombarded by a variety of wonderful tastes, like a child in a 7 storey toy shop (or my first visit to London’s Hamley’s, aged 29…).

If there was anything nicer than the frites, it’s the crazy frites here, served with bacon and cheese topping… need I say more? If there’s anything nicer than the crazy frites, it’s their burger…. Despite the variety of wonderful tastes hitting my palettes, the patty was so thick, I still got to savour the wonderful flavours of fresh beef. Burgers were done medium rare to my specifications, so it was juicy and delicious! Despite this…. I barely got my hands dirty, which was incredible, but fret not for those messier than me (I am only messi on the football pitch…), they provide wet wipes…
Well, there was only one thing nicer than their burgers here, their frites! 😆😆

They have a Crispy Tender Chicken burger, looking at the name, you’d think either a McCrispy, or a Tender Chicken Burger at Burger King, maybe with some batter, right? It was actually a burger with chicken tenders! Ok, it’s really crispy, that part is done well, but besides a good crisp to it, it had even less to offer then putting chicken tenders in a bun with some lettuce. You’re better off ordering just the chicken tenders under the snack menu.

What made the experience absorbing was the ambience. Nicely decorated, it felt like a nice warm eating pub in London. If only they play good music…. Like Neil Diamond…..

Delicious charcoal grilled steaks and meats, nice smoky aroma and succulent products
Impressive looking stall at Yishun Park Hawker Centre, Smokin’ Joe actually charcoal grills his products at the hawker stall! How they managed to get the approval to do that is remarkable but we should be glad the authorities allowed it. Imagine they’ll have to change the name to Gassin’ Joe, or worse, Gassy Joe! 🤣🤣🤣 More seriously, smoked meat tastes so much better.
%20Smokin%20Joe%206.jpg)

The chicken chop came with a garlic toast, green salad and mash. The side dishes were all decent, no complaints, the chicken chop was fantastic. It was one of the thickest I’ve seen around, well grilled to retain the moisture and juiciness in the meat, and topped with a very nice gravy, which was slightly sour and light rather than the usual strong taste, I thought it didn’t come with any gravy or sauce!
%20Smokin%20Joe%2014.jpg)
%20Smokin%20Joe%2013.jpg)
On another day, I came back and tried the Wagyu burger. The smoky taste of the burger was brilliant, it remained in my taste buds even after I’ve reached home, on the opposite side of the island… The French fries that came with it was not the best, but the burger had a nice unassuming bun, soft and buttery, with a great thick juicy patty that was delicious and done just right, medium. It was easy to eat as well, not too messy. For $9 this was good value for money for a “premium” burger, didn’t matter how much wagyu beef was really in the patty, it was just brilliant.
%20Smokin%20Joe%2011.jpg)
%20Smokin%20Joe%2012.jpg)
The ribs here would not be a bad choice, ours was slightly on the dry side, but it tasted good and was tender, served with BBQ sauce, something you can find in most places but Smokin Joe’s will not disappoint and one of the better ones around.
%20Smokin%20Joe%203.jpg)
%20Smokin%20Joe%204.jpg)
And then for a steak, I just realised this is the only photo I have of a T-bone, it was so good I forgot to take more photos…. So I’ll let a thousand words speak with this photo… Definitely a recommended place for a nice “cheap” steak.

Good quality meat with fabulous garlic sauce!
A very popular stall at the old airport hawker centre, the wait for this can sometimes be up to 30-45 mins during dinner time on weekends. Order and pick up available @ 88900353.
The meat and the way it was cooked used to be ordinary to me, what stood out from them was the garlic sauce. I had always ordered the mixed grill and asked for more garlic sauce, change the mutton for more chicken chop. I didn’t think too highly of the pork chop, which was the one that came with the garlic sauce; and their mutton, was pretty unbearable, even for a big fan of mutton….
There were some recent changes, they must have sourced better quality pork and mutton chops, these have improved leaps and bounds, now I don’t change my mixed grill order anymore!
%20Old%20Airport%20-%20Western%20%2011.jpg)
%20Old%20Airport%20-%20Western%20%2012.jpg)
The chicken chop is nice, succulent and a decent size. Add the yummy garlic sauce, and it hits a nerve, the one that excites your taste buds….
Despite not providing garlic sauce with this order, they are pretty flexible and you can ask for it with an order of chicken chop. I’m not sure a steak, the mutton or the fried chicken would go well with garlic sauce though, plus hawker centre western stalls are not exactly known for the quality of their steak.
%20Old%20Airport%20-%20Western%205.jpg)
%20Old%20Airport%20-%20Western%2010.jpg)
As mentioned, their mutton has improved, it is now a tasty and flavourful piece of mutton, well seared. Likewise the pork chop, it used to be a piece of meat, now it comes alive a little, succulent and fresh. Both comes with the garlic sauce. Their new menu indicates which item comes with the garlic sauce 🤣
%20Old%20Airport%20Western%202.jpg)
%20Old%20Airport%20Western%203.jpg)
I have never been a fan of a chicken cutlet at local western food stalls, however, with recent changes (the boss mentioned his children are dabbling in the business now), this item seems to have climbed up the popularity rank, sans the garlic sauce. Indeed, it is well seared and is more like a chicken chop than a cutlet (battered piece of chicken which is usually drier as it is normally deep fried). Juicy with a little bit more char and crisp than the chop, I’ll go for this now and then if I want to avoid the garlic sauce which can sometimes cause thirst….

Always served with a good portion of tasty coleslaw, crispy enough fries, a sunny side up and a butter bun, you have a hearty meal here. My choice when I feel like I don’t need carbo for the day…. Got a figure to maintain, you know….
They have recently opened a new outlet in Bedok, slightly less flexible to customers request, didn’t allow me to change my mutton to chicken, but that is how I found out about their upgrades!

I was told to give this place a try, guaranteed "the best you’ve ever tasted", by someone who barely know my taste; not sure why I listened, but I’m glad I did.
Rejoicings has been around for almost 20 years, moving to the market from the coffee shop across the street about 2 years ago. Everything sold here was prepared by them, the gravy, sauces, coleslaw, as well the batter for their fried stuff. I was impressed.
Let's begin with the bun that was given with quite a few of their dishes. Crispy, obviously fried to give it a glistening (yes, oily) look and a crispy outer layer. The moment you see it, unless you are very health conscious, you’ll love it. That’s why my hands reached for it first before they go for the phone… crispy, and oily, on the outside, soft inside. Enough said. The fries, solid, crispy fries, this is not the place for soggy fries fans, you won’t find any.
%20Rejoicings%204.jpg)
%20Rejoicings%205.jpg)
The chicken chop here was excellent. By far their best seller and you can tell the story from the cover with this dish, it tasted as good as it looks. Nicely cooked with a crispy outer layer, slightly burnt, it had succulent meat, topped with a delicious gravy, absolutely delicious! Once I started I couldn’t stop. Came with baked beans and home-made coleslaw.
The same gravy accompanied the lamb chops here, the lamb chop with spaghetti was also brilliant. I kept spooning the copious amount of gravy provided well after I’ve finished both the chop and the spaghetti. As for the lamb chop itself, I think it’s more mutton chop than lamb chop (ie not as tender as would have liked) but the gravy definitely made up for it. This is the usual practice in hawker western stalls anyway.
%20Rejoicings%2010.jpg)
%20Rejoicings%2012.jpg)
Black pepper steak. I was rather tired when I ordered this, and the lady shouted the order as medium in Cantonese to the chef… that woke me up a bit. First, hey define the doneness of the steak, quite unheard of at hawker centres. Next, I’m a medium rare guy. Had to quickly correct her. It was served as I asked. Well done, I mean, medium rare done. The black pepper sauce was nice and delicious, but a steak from a hawker stall is a steak from a hawker stall, you’re not getting a fillet mignon, not even Angus beef, right? Ya. Good but at $10, I’m not sure I’d order this again unless I happen to be here and suddenly decide I need a beef fix.
The chicken chop burger at $2.80, however, is a bargain, even if it’s just palm sized. Same nicely cooked chicken chop mentioned earlier in a bun with melted cheese and home-made coleslaw. The coleslaw mixed very well with the melted cheese, giving the burger an added heavenly taste. The last time I have something as good was in Macau, biting into the famous pork chop burger, and I think this chicken chop is tastier!
%20Rejoicings%203.jpg)

%20Rejoicings%2016.jpg)
The fried spring chicken, at 800g is rather big, for me…. I couldn’t finish it myself. It was nicely brown, slightly to the burnt side which is how I like it. Skin was extremely crispy and delicious. It was slightly on the salty side but bearable. Served with coleslaw and fries, it is a good bargain at $8 as 2-3 persons can share this.
%20Rejoicings%209.jpg)
Finally, the butter batter fish, this came with coleslaw, baked beans, fries and the beautiful bun. The fish was wonderfully coated with a soft but crispy batter made for fish and chips. There were 2 big pieces of fish, look at the photo, it looks like Del Monte banana fritters! The fish was packed with meat inside the batter, nice and tasty with the size just right, so that every bite had adequate portions of both the crispy batter and fish, this too was well worth a try.
%20Rejoicings%2014.jpg)
Another good thing about this place is that it opens til late, so it’s an option for those who find themselves looking for something nice “after hours”.

Serving fried chicken wings in various styles, and chicken cutlet, grilled chicken and salmon with fried rice, spaghetti carbonara or aglio olio.

The fried chicken wings were quite well done in the Korean style, good texture and great batter for the bite. Taste wise, the thai chilli and salt & pepper would be my choice. I didn’t mind the Korean hot, but my Korean friend laughed and thought it was neither Korean nor hot! Her favourite was the Thai, which was the general consensus in the group I went with.

The star of Salt should be the chicken cutlet! $8 for a big piece of cutlet (ok, there was a lot of batter), I understand for $7 you get half, so I’d suggest to always get the $8. Within the batter was a delicious piece of chicken thigh. Tender and juicy, you can hear the squish with each bite; nicely marinated to taste the freshness of the chicken, not common for a deep fried chicken.
The batter, hard to find a better batter for a chicken cutlet. It’s crispy, fried to perfection, bringing out a good brown and abundance crispiness. I’d describe it as like a batter for fish. It expanded and made the cutlet look bigger, with hot air.., but I didn’t mind. It was one where every piece of excess batter is eaten. This is a new favourite and I’ve been having cravings since!

The grilled chicken was decent and juicy too, cooked sous vide. I’m quite certain the cutlet was cooked in the same way, which was why a fried piece of chicken can be so juicy and tender. It was quite delicious, but loses out immensely to the cutlet.
The fried rice that came with the cutlet was a bit disappointing, the aglio olio not too bad, but not fantastic either. The carbonara was pasta in diluted cream sauce with garlic. They do have an option of mee sua (Chinese angel hair) in soy sauce which was decent. I’d suggest to avoid the fried rice. Despite my warnings, my sister opted for fried rice, I could see the disappointment on her face as she ate. 😄🤦🏼♂️ Salt will not be known for its carbos…. My choice: aglio olio

The soup items were not too bad. Accompanying chicken not dry and overcooked, still succulent and tender. I tried the ginseng chicken soup, and I’d say fell for the marketing gimmick…. It was actually dang gui (Chinese angelica, or also known as “female ginseng”). Soup was nice though, flavourful and rich it was enjoyable.
Their signatures, the fried chicken and chicken cutlet are the ones to go for here. Very nice.

A place I grew up with, a place I adore;
A place with nice scenes, good food, and more...
Try you must, their curry,
Or you might be a little sorry!
Colbar used to the closest place for food when I was living in the Portsdown area, one bus stop away, my flatmates and I would sometimes take a stroll over.
First, a little history. Rustic and old school, the structure is from the 50’s, it has photos of past football teams hung around the walls, and a nice coin slot weighing machine as its centre piece welcoming you as you go through the main door. No, it doesn’t work, says I weigh 68Kg, no way!! ☺ Before 2003, it was located about 200m away at Jalan Hang Jebat, next to an archery range and a football field next to the AYE, opposite Normanton Park.
The Lims intended to retire when the building was to be torn down to make way for reconstruction of the area. Its regular customers petitined to retain it, and thankfully the authorities did their best, painstakingly bringing the structure piece by piece over to its current location. Its neighbour which was also my tailor was gutted, adding much needed extra dining space with an open area we now see. It used to be full on weekends, with customers that would bring their dogs along, sip beer and chit chat while enjoying the cozy environment.

%20Colbar%205.jpg)
%20Colbar%2012_GIF.gif)
Family run since the colonial days, the Lims took over from their parents who used to serve the British army. It is a nice cozy place for a meal and a drink, with a wide selection of craft beers, and a good choice of desserts from its old school floor fridge, I used to always wash down my meal with a snicker ice cream, not something widely available back then.

If I’m honest, their western selection has its appeal as comfort food and nothing special, it is one of the few places that serves chunky chips instead of fries, good for fans of chips! It has a good variety of Chinese dishes and they are decent but nothing extraordinary too; however, there are 2 items here that brings me back here over and over again. The chicken curry and the omelette!
On the menu, they have ham omelette and cheese omelette. I’d order a ham and cheese omelette, the ham giving the cheese omelette extra savoury, and it’s heavenly! The omelette is a good size, we figured at least 6-7 eggs are used, some melted cheese would ooze out like a lava cake when you cut into it. Melty cheese, ham in a nicely cooked egg omelette, either I’m easily spoiled or does it sound heavenly to you too? Omelettes are served with chips, which you can dip into the curry for extra flavour! It is not cheap for an omelette at $14, but one has to pamper oneself every now and then!
%20Colbar%2011.jpg)
Ham and cheese omelette
The curry is made from a recipe created by a relative, who still prepares the powder for them. Colbar’s curry is their best-selling item on the menu and rightly so, if my taste buds are the judge of curries, it’s the Lebron James of curry (ok, show me a, well, Curry of curry and we can have a nice debate!).
The spice mix for the curry is wonderful, heavier on cumin and with just enough spiciness to give us a kick, it is thick; they serve curry with various food but the chicken is my go to, they blend well. This may sound racist to some, but the Lims are observant, they’d serve local customers with a whole chicken thigh, uncut, while Caucasian customers get a nice piece of breast meat as they say that’s the general preference of each customer base. I did not realise they serve anything other than chicken thigh until one day I went with a friend from the US and he got the breast! And yes, he was happier with that…. At $13, it is not cheap, but I would sometimes crave this and have been coming back for it over the years despite living on another part of the island.
This is definitely one of my last meal contender!

%20Colbar%2028.jpg)
The curry chicken
Below are samples of some Chinese dishes and the chicken cutlet. The chicken cutlet is actually quite decent, thick meat and crunchy batter. The Hainanese pork chop nothing to write home about but the sweet and sour pork quite decent, you’ll definitely find better ones elsewhere…

%20Colbar%2018.jpg)
Clockwise from top right: Hainanese pork chop, chicken cutlet, sweet and sour pork
They do have some pretty decent fried carbos, the special fried rice or fried bee hoon (dried) is something to consider. I haven’t had a steak there since the 90’s, not sure if they’ve upgraded, but let’s just say it was an experience…. Unless I come with more adventurous friends, it has always been the curry chicken and the ham and cheese omelette. Writing about this now has just given me cravings again for the curry chicken…

Amongst the many items here, their curry is by far the best, and the cheese (and ham) omelette a decent second. Colbar is also a very cozy and relaxed place to hang out, if they have more comfortable chairs, we can stay here with a beer forever!

Side note… my inspiration to get an English Cocker Spaniel came from Colbar, when I saw an unleashed Spaniel adoringly run into a puddle of rain water and splashed itself on it, smiling away with glee, 3 years later when I had my own place, Ziggy came into my life.

Average food, but excellent atmosphere, nice drinking hole
At the corner of Changi Food Centre, Changi Village, which is at the corner of Singapore, Charlie has found himself a nice place for people to “lepak one corner” (to do nothing and just while away the time).
Very nice environment, this is a good drinking place. Their food is decent pub food but it’s not really a place to travel to one corner of Singapore just to taste these! Definitely a good relaxing place to bring the family out, to bring a nice date along, to have a pint by yourself, or even somewhere to aim for after a bike trip (wouldn’t suggest a beer on these occasions though…).

Besides beers, they serve burgers and hot dogs, fish and chips, which may be the thing to go for but we didn’t, chops and steaks and pastas. We ordered the burger and hot dog, no complaints but we weren’t exactly salivating over them.

Changi beach is also a short walk away, so after a stroll along the beach, why not Charlie’s corner? Open every day except Mondays, when Charlie goes fishing….

A cozy place to come to, as the saying goes, it would be moments spent together that we enjoy and remember. Charlie's corner would be the great advert for this phrase, you'll reminisce about the time you enjoyed here, the food, not that much.... 😂😂😎
